Still within walking distance to town for the more willing avid adventurer. The campsite is nestled and surrounded by dense bush ideal for wildlife that roam this very area.

Don't be alarmed to witness or hear Hippos grazing, Bush Babies cries, and smaller Duiker. The odd Leopard has been spotted so make sure to keep an eye out for these amazing creatures.

Apart from the wildlife rest easy while listening to the Hippos grunting in the estuary and the waves crashing on the nearby beach.

Prior to arrival at the SugarLoaf Campsite please note that one has to stop at the KZN Ezemvelo offices.

The campsite / caravan park offers a variety of sites ranging from sunny to fully shaded campsites. The majority of the camp area is grassed. The entire area is well protected from the prevailing winds thanks to the indigenous sub-tropical bush.

Getting to the Beach from Sugarloaf Campsite St Lucia

The beach may be reached from the entrance to the campsite walk along the road towards the estuary and then follow the boardwalk. It's a short and beautiful walk towards the beach. The beach sand may be quite warm during the summer months so it is advisable to take some slops along. Please note that there are no lifeguards so swimming is at one's own risk. The Indian ocean offers warm water year-round and is also one of the top fishing destinations in KwaZulu Natal. It would be a good idea to take some light tackle along if possible.

The campsite is within close proximity and therefore offers some magnificent sunsets, Hippos grunting during the evening, and of course the bounty of Nile Crocodiles and Birdlife. Certain caution must however be followed when visiting and exploring the Estuary. Please do not swim in the estuary, Crocodiles, Hippos and even some species of sharks may be found within the Estuary. Fishing is allowed however a permit is needed. Please stay vigilant at all times.

St Lucia Ski Boat Club

All campers are more than welcome to enjoy the St Lucia Ski Boat Club. Scrumptious meals are on offer daily as well as breakfast. The club also offers a small plunge pool and a lovely lookout deck to enjoy both the estuary and ocean from.

Should you be camping and would like to launch your vessel please note that there is a surcharge and tickets may be purchased from the club. The club offers a tractor that assists all vessels going to sea.

BoardWalk & Estuary

The Sugarloaf Campsite borders the Boardwalk as well as the St Lucia Estuary. One may easily access these on foot from the campsite. From the entrance one ay also enjoy the St Lucia Ski Boat Club for some scrumptious meals and of course spectacular views of both the Estuary and Ocean. Please note that the Hippos do wonder at night and care must be taken.

Best Times to visit and Camp at Sugarloaf Campsite St Lucia

May June and July has to be the best time of the year to visit and camp in St Lucia. The intense heat of January and February has subsided. With the subtropical weather May, June and July means virtually no wind, almost no mosquitos, and truly the perfect weather days imaginable.

The above dates also coincide with the quietest months in the area ironically. The campsite will undoubtedly be quieter thus offering you a better experience. This is definitely the best time to get out and about without the hustle and bustle.

Like it when it's busy well then the December school holidays is a must. The sugarloaf campsite will without a doubt be booked to capacity. Boats, bicycles, and every type of camping trailer and caravan will be on display. It's a jovial and social time especially if you are camping with family and friends.

Please note that this campsite does get booked way in advance so if it's possible please do so early.

During the Summer months, it is advisable to take mosquito nets along due to the location (next to the estuary).

Hiking & Birding Trails

Should you enjoy hiking and birding then why not venture into the Igwalagwala Hiking Trail.

This trail is no more than 900 meters from the Caravan Park. From the entrance turn right and continue past the Eden Park Caravan Park. You will see a sign on the left-hand side indicating the start of the trail. The hiking trail meanders through the dense like bush and then past the estuary. This trail is best enjoyed early morning and late afternoon, please do keep an eye out for Hippos.

Fishing Rock & Surf

St Lucia has for years been a top destination for fishing, why not enjoy some fishing from either the Estuary or Beach. Light tackle makes for some incredible fun. Please do note that a fishing permit is required and may be purchased from the St Lucia Post Office.

Surf fishing species include the likes of Grunter, Shad, Ignoblis, Leervis and the list goes on and on.
