Please note that St Lucia South Africa Does not offer any Beach Accommodation, all accommodation or at least the closest accommodation to the beach is 3km away. This is due to a green belt that extends right around St Lucia with the St Lucia Estuary on the remainder. The green belt is important as it serves as a walk way for the various animals and wildlife that can be found in the area. This green belt is primarily used by Hippo’s during the evening as they go in search of grass.

Please do not be deterred by the fact, St Lucia remains an incredibly popular and splendid area to visit. In actual very few areas have what St Lucia has to offer when it comes to Accommodation, wildlife and beaches. St Lucia offers from camping to 5 star accommodation, an abundance of wildlife and the most superb beaches that one can imagine.

Many visitors use the short walk to the beach as a means of exercise and one is surely to come across the numerous vervet monkeys on your way down to the beach. The decision to ensure that no accommodation is built in close proximity to the beach in St Lucia was and remains a good thing.

KingFisher Road would thus be the closest road to the beach and therefore the closest lodge, B&B would be Elephant Coast Guesthouse, this guesthouse not only serves as the closest to the beach while in St Lucia but the property is also on the greenbelt. One can get to witness the Hippo’s in the evening as they grass on the lawn and listen to the Bush Babies in the trees above.

At present the Estuary is not open to the ocean due to a drought that the area has been experiencing for the last few years, however iSimangaliso Wetland Park are currently employing various methods to get more water into the estuary before having it open naturally to the ocean.

Sugar Loaf Camping site is the closest non accommodation to the beach in St Lucia, this site is magnificent with some splendid sights and sounds at night. One has also the opportunity of walking out of the camping grounds and you are within walking distance to the beach.

The remainder of St Lucia is surrounded by the St Lucia Estuary which is home to an impressive 800 Hippo’s and 1200 Nile Crocodiles. Fishing is permitted in the estuary however one is required to obtain a fishing licence prior from KZN Wildlife.

From St Lucia one can travel to Cape Vidal a protected bay and a area that offers accommodation right next to the beach.
