Western Shores iSimangaliso Wetland Park
Just before entering the town of St Lucia, one will pass the Western Shores of iSimangaliso Wetland Park Gate (Dukuduku Gate). The western shores now officially open to the public offers one a sense of true bush yet it is so closely situated to the coast.
The park boasts the Big 5, Elephant, Buffalo, Rhino and Leopard and numerous other wildlife species that makes for a true safari like reserve. iSimangaliso Wetland Park is the managing authority as have since dramatically improved the infrastructure within this park. One has the opportunity not only to experience incredible scenery but also enjoy the various lookouts and canopy walks that are found in the park.
Imagine Giraffes or Elephants while the African sun sets, Leopards stalking at night or Hippo's grazing in the wild. This is what makes the Western Shores so special. Its an incredible park with exciting and amazing wildlife species to be found.
The western shores is cut by Lake St Lucia and thus the western and the eastern sides of the park. The two parks have a different feel to them. one with the Ocean ( Cape Vidal ) and the other bush and Estuary. If you are in the area we would definitely recommend that you venture into this magnificent park during day light hours.
Take a picnic basket along as unfortunately their are no shops within the park.
Accessing the park can be done via the Dukuduku Gate just outside of St Lucia, or alternatively the Charters creek offramp while in the N2 between Hluhluwe and Mtubatuba Towns.
Fishing is possible from Charters Creek however please do enquire prior as water levels do fluctuate.
