Surrounded by water and dense bush you quickly realize this is no ordinary town, with Hippos grunting in the background and the beat ofĀ Zulu drums in town you have finally arrived. The town is small and with only 1 main road (Mckenzie Street) its easy to navigate, all shops and restaurants are to be found here.
One street back and you find yourself in the residential area, littered with bed and breakfasts, lodges, and hotels. With a permanent residence of approximately 1000 residents and 800 Hippos, 1200 Nile Crocodiles this truly is a place where everyone gets along. Beyond the residential area you will encounter a green belt with thick bush, beyond this lies the Indian Ocean.
Arriving in St Lucia for the first time, one quickly realizes this is not just any normal village. Being greeted by the grunts of Hippos as you cross the St Lucia Estuary is for one quite unique. You have arrived in a village or town that is surrounded by an abundance of wildlife. Vervet monkey troops wondering the streets in search of a quick treat. The occasional Hippo holding up traffic and this during daylight hours, or the lapping of palm trees. Yes, this is a place like no other.
A slower pace and for a good reason, this is, after all, a holiday destination. Orientation is easy to the West the Estuary, to the East the Indian Ocean to the North the iSimangaliso Wetland Park and to the South the Estuary.
All shops, restaurants, and curio markets are to be found on the main road. A quick visit to the local fruit market will ensure some tasty tropical treats. Get set for an incredible stay.

Where is iSimangaliso Wetland Park
Situated in the northern side of KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. One has the option of accessing various parts of the park from varying gates. The park is massive in size and stretches over an area of 3280 square kilometers.
For the purpose of this article, we will be discussing the southern section of the park.
Navigating this massive Park from St Lucia
- Taking the N2 northbound from Durban, turn left at Mtubatuba
- Continue for another 28km towards St Lucia, keep an eye out for the Western Shores Gate (Dukuduku Gate)
- From St Lucia travel in a Northerly direction approximately 3 km towards the Eastern Shores Gate (Cape Vidal Gate)
