Join Heritage Tours & Safaris  & Shoreline Boat Safaris on a 2-hour Hippo Boat Cruise on the largest estuarine system in Africa.

  • Departing every 2 hours these trips offer you an opportunity to witness the resident Hippos and Nile Crocodiles that reside in the area.
  • It is estimated that 800 hippos and 1200 Nile crocodiles reside in the area.
  • The system 85km from top to bottom and 25km wide at its widest is regarded as the largest estuarine system in Africa.
  • With an incredible abundance of Birdlife year long you are assured of some magnificent sightings and photographic opportunities.

Travel aboard the two Shoreline Vessels that have been custom-built for the prevailing conditions and environment.

These two vessels offer you the shallowest draft getting you closer to any sighting than any other vessel on the estuary.

Small in size the vessels are only permitted to carry 15 passengers, with ample space to move about and knowledgeable and experienced skippers/ rangers you will undoubtedly be intrigued by the amount of information that you will receive during the duration of the Hippo Boat Cruise.

Each vessel has been fitted with 4-stroke outboard motors making your boat cruise comfortable and most importantly as quiet as possible. It is customary for the skipper to switch the motors off and slowly drift towards a sighting, just imagine an African Fish Eagle only 2 meters away or an entire pod of Hippos right in front of the vessel.

We had a very good time with Mdu during the trip. He had such a good way to guide us and answer our questions and His eyes spotted animals like an eagle. We saw hippos, a crocodile, birds and a lizard. We enjoyed it and definitely would go again!
Siyabonga kakhuku! Thank you so much!

This is a wonderful tour, the guide, Heini (?- like the beer) was really informative but also very witty and his enthusiasm for the area very much came through. We saw lots of hippos and fabulous creatures they are too. Only one baby croc and a mature one that was barely visible through the reeds but that didn’t matter. Heini also pointed out to us a variety of birds from sea eagle to kingfishers and cormorants.
Fabulous scenery as well.
Only 15 people on the boat so all got an excellent view.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Hippo Boat Cruises depart every two hours from the Siyabonga Jetty prior to the bridge crossing over into St Lucia.

We offer Online Bookings, Email Inquiries, and of course Telephonic Bookings for the Hippo Boat Trips.

No, it's not always essential, however during the various tourist seasons it is incredibly busy, especially for the late afternoon trips. Should you be hesitant I would suggest calling the office at +27 35 5901555 to inquire as to the availability.

99% Yes, the estuary is home to 800 Hippos and it is incredibly rare that we do not see the Hippos while out on these cruises.

It is not guaranteed, but I can assure you that the skippers know what to look for and if they are about too you are sure that they will let you know.

I would recommend either the early morning or late afternoon Hippo Boat Cruise. Early mornings are a lot quieter with fewer vessels on the estuary and the Hippos are nice and relaxed. The late afternoon trips are of course amazing with the Sunsets as well.
