The Eastern Shores of iSimangaliso Wetland Park is accessed by the Cape Vidal gate bordering the town of St Lucia. Cut by Lake St Lucia on the western side and the Indian Ocean on the Eastern side.
The Eastern Shores offers one numerous day and night time activities, from ski boating, surf fishing, whale spotting, wildlife safaris, night drive safaris, bird spotting, picnicking, swimming, and snorkeling at Cape Vidal, and Turtle viewing to mention but just a few of the outings and experiences that one can enjoy while in the eastern shores.
Numerous access roads, loop hides, and hides make this the ideal safari destination combined with the incredible wildlife species found within the park. Cape Vidal has a protected bay ideal for swimming and snorkeling. Please do take particular note that snorkeling should only take place during the low tide due to strong rip currents.
The area is incredibly popular and thus vehicle access is limited to 120 vehicles per day, gate times do vary according to season.
Winter opening times are 6:00 am and summer opening times are 5:00 am.
This park is unique and diverse not only will it impress with its incredible wildlife but its scenery is incredible. Wildlife species found within the park include Rhino ( Black * White), Buffalo, Leopard, Antelope, Hippo, endangered Samango monkey, vervet monkey, Hyenna, and much much more. The area is also synonymous with its birdlife.
Cape Vidal is the main destination and also offers Log Style Accommodation and Camping facilities. A small convenience store and fuel bowser. The closest town is St Lucia 34km away and it is advisable should you want to enjoy a picnic that supplies are bought prior.
The Eastern Shores covers a large area and a full day's outing can easily be enjoyed by combining both wildlife spotting and bathing. Mission rocks and Cape Vidal both offer picnic areas.
Just some of the viewpoints while on the eastern shores include Mission Rocks viewpoint, Bhangazi viewpoint, and the Hippo Pan.
Fishing is allowed both from the shores and deep-sea, please ensure that you have a fishing license which is available at the post office or KZN office in St Lucia. Deep sea-going vessels both ski boats and jet skis are permitted please do note that a specific amount of vessels are allowed to launch per day please enquire at the reception office.
The Eastern Shores forms part of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, South Africa's very first world heritage site (Unesco 1999).
